Tech support in India

Monday, September 27th, 2004

Tech support from APC (of course they’re all in India) sent me an E-mail saying that safety is their utmost concern (yeah, right) and they’d send me a free UPS as a replacement. Since my model is discontinued they’ll send me the next one up that’s in the same ballpark as my old one. It should arrive within 5 business days. So maybe by Friday or next Monday I’ll have a new UPS. They’re sending it to me free of charge. I guess they’re doing it to make sure I don’t sue them! Hopefully this time it won’t go up like a crispy critter!

Most of the lab was moved to the new location down the hall this affternoon. The main server and the firewall/router were moved over and the fiber cables were rerouted to the new place. The old lab is a shell of its old self - empty racks and tables. The furniture in the old lab has to go to the new one, and the furniture that’s in the new one goes in the old one. That should take place around the 29th or so. Then we can reassemble things. But the new racks and equipment are very nice. Hopefully it won’t become a cabling spaghetti mess like the old rack and patch panels.

Whew! Close call on this one

FIRE IN THE HOLE! Seriously! I’ve owned a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) for the last two years to keep my computer on in the event of a power outage (we get frequent power blips). So far its been running fine until this afternoon when it acted funny. I was on the PC and left the room for a minute or two. Came back and the PC was off. The UPS’s “overload” light was on. This was definately strange. I hit the reset button and BAM, the insides caught on fire! Yes, the circuity inside went up in flames. Fortunately the fire was short lived and did NOT cause any damage to the house or the computer. (I got the computer back up on a temporary power strip). But that was definately weird. I looked up on Google and found that other models of the brand of UPS that I have (APC) were recalled due to fire concerns, but not mine. I sent an E-mail to tech support and lets see what they say.

Elvis doesn’t have anything on Diana

Friday, September 24th, 2004

Diana has officially left the building. Today was her last day at the office. After 30+ years, she’s called it quits. Though she’s officially retired, it only lasted 45 minutes. She’s now working part time as sales director for a catering firm here in town (its the same one who catered our wedding back in May). And on top of that, she still has a referral real estate license. So between these two she has her hands full. Oh, and on Monday, she’ll register both of us at the YMCA. Time to shed these extra pounds!

Philthydelphia / Lab move

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2004

Visited the City of Brotherly Shove yesterday for a briefing… long trip up there and back, but glad I stayed the night instead of driving up all yesterday morning.

At work, we’re moving the lab from one room to another. Both places are a mess, but hopefully the new place will be better than the old one to help prevent cabling spaghetti with Ethernet cables going all over the place. The big day to move the majority of equipment will be on the 29th.

Low key, just the way she wanted it

The folks at Diana’s office held a good going away dinner for her last night. Low key, just the way she wanted it. We all had a good time.

Hmm.. you’d think it was my birthday

Friday, September 17th, 2004

Happy Birthday to me.. Happy Birthday to me.. Happy Birthday to me… No, I’m not gonna tell you how old I am either. Those who know already know. Those who don’t know don’t need to know. (grin)

Busy body / Dan RatherNot / Ken Jennings

Thursday, September 16th, 2004

My life seems to busy lately… I used to have free time, but where did it go? Seems like after I’ve been married, I have no free time at home. And at work, its go-go-go non-stop for the last month or so. But I’ll make some free time to satisfy my “fans”, namely my brother and his fiancĂ©e (hi Bruce and Melody).

Lets see.. Ivan the terrible.. yup, he certainly is. Three hurricanes to hit the US this year… and this one went up the Gulf coast this time.. I was going to call some people I’m working with down in Pascagoula, MS (near Biloxi)… but I think no one would answer. Talked to my friend in New Orleans the last two nights. He doesn’t think it will affect the Big Easy that much since the eye went east of them. Hope people make it OK through this one.

Well, it looks like Dan RatherNot got caught with his pants down. More and more of the LIBERAL media has said that they think those papers are fake. Gee, its kinda sad for the Tiffany network (aka CBS) that other liberal media outlets are realizing that the papers are more than likely a forgery. From what I hear, it all started with good old fashioned WEB LOGS! (grin) pointing out the obvious errors and the media took notice. Wonder if anyone important reads this one? Doubt it.

Ken Jennings… he’s still Jeopardy champ. Rumor has it he’ll lose on the 75th show and that show will air in late October. There is finally light at the end of his tunnel. Good guy, but geeze… his 15 minutes of fame were up a LONG time ago.
