IC inventor dies
Tuesday, June 21st, 2005Jack Kilby died recently. Not a name most people know of. He is credited for inventing the integrated circuit. Yes, not as popular as the people at Bell Labs who invented the transistor in 1947, but Kilby, working at Texas Instruments, invented the IC in the summer of 1958. Before that, everything was discrete components. This way many things can be put on a single piece of silicon. Hence later and greater things, like Intel’s invention of the CPU in 1971 could occcur. Kilby’s name will be soon forgotten, but his legacy will live on for many years to come.
By the way, this is the first day of summer - and its all downhill from here until December. The days are getting shorter.. shorter.. shorter….
