Sing it in English, and ONLY in English!

Friday, April 28th, 2006

Here go again with the Hispanics. This time they want US (meaning the United States) to change OUR national anthem to fit THEIR language. That’s right, they want to sing the Star Spangled Banner in SPANISH!

I’m sorry folks, but it was written in English. It should be sung in English. Period, end of story.

There have been MANY immigrants that have come to our country of various national origins. Most of them spoke other languages other than English. For the most part, they learned our language. It should be a REQUIREMENT that if you immigrate to the United States that you learn at least enough English that those who were born and raised here can communicate with you. (In fact, I would support a measure in Congress to make English the official language, but I highly doubt such legislation would ever be enacted).

Why should I have to learn THEIR language to communicate with them? They should learn ours. If I ever immigrated to another country (though I doubt I would ever do so), I would expect to learn their language. So the same should go for anybody who immigrates here. I’m sure my ancestors learned English, at least a little bit. I would expect anyone else coming here to do the same thing.

We are a melting pot of many people of many cultures. But if I have to communicate with these people, I expect them to speak English.

Fulfilling a duty

Monday, April 24th, 2006

This past weekend, my brother and I (along with our wives and a number of our relatives) laid my father’s ashes to rest at a memorial service for him in rural Kansas, not far where he was born and next to our mother who is also buried there. It was a difficult time, but with the help of our relatives, we fulfilled our father’s desire to return to his home.

While we were there, our cousins arranged for an impromptu family reunion. A number of relatives I had met before, some I never met for one reason for another. Nevertheless, we have a wonderful family. I was pleased that some relatives on our mother’s side (1st and 2nd cousins) came to the memorial service.

Next time we go to Kansas, it will be for fun and not for performing a duty.

It won’t work, trust me

Do all those illegal immigrants who are protesting think they’ll make a difference? Guess they need to learn politics 101. Protests don’t really work, folks. All that effort for nothing.

Katie moves to CBS - the end of life as we know it

Thursday, April 6th, 2006

The topic of discussion for the last several months - Won’t she or will she - has finally been answered. Yes, Ms. Couric will be leaving NBC’s “Today” as of the end of May and will join CBS news as the new anchor starting in September. Miss perky will now grace our TV screens at night instead of during the day.

Many are predicting that this move will flop. I tend to agree. The sorority bitch (yes, she was in Delta Delta Delta in college) who always gets her way will now attempt to be the replacement for Dan Rather (not) and the venerable Walter Cronkite (who, 24 years after he retired from CBS, has NEVER been properly replaced!).

How does Bob Schieffer REALLY feel? Of course he put on a front to satisfy his bosses at CBS. If I were him, I would feel dejected. Imagine being asked to replace someone who held a position for 24 years, and then be kicked out in less than a year? I think CBS is looking for star power and entertainment value, not a hard news person. What kinds of “hard news” has Miss Perky done? I don’t think being on Today for 15 years cuts it as a good news anchor. Has she done any field reporting? (Both Cronkite and Rather were good field reporters before being an anchor). Even Brian Williams was a good field reporter AND did sub work for Tom Brokaw! What kind of investigative work has the bleeding heart stuck-up bitch done?

Finally, Andy Rooney (of 60 minutes fame) was interviewed about the situation. Glad that he can give an honest answer. He said that no one at CBS was happy to see her. I wouldn’t be either. At least if Rooney said it, he probably meant it, and won’t get fired for it either (at 87 years old, he can get away with a lot of crap!).

Bottom line, I think its a VERY dumb move for CBS, they’ll pay her WAY too much more than she’s worth, and still get crappy ratings. And this is in an age where the “Evening News” is not the show it once was. With 24/7 news weenies such as CNN / Fox / CNBC / MSNBC, and of course the Internet, who really cares? I don’t recall when I last watched an entire 30 minute network news show! Enough said.

U-Haul, I Haul, a hauling we will go

Monday, April 3rd, 2006

Just got back from a LONG trip to western Ohio. Drove out to Dayton area in a U-Haul truck in not the nicest weather (rain/wind for part of the trip). Twelve hours out there, ten hours back (in a car - Diana and I split the driving back). Why a trip all the way out there? Taking the step-daughter’s clothes, bed and other goodies she’s been storing here. So now its all there! Our garage is a LOT cleaner. Her old bedroom (now a guest room) is also a LOT cleaner! Got the log jam broken, now we can really clean other parts of the house!
