List History

The Fredericksburg Internet Provider list has its origins in the summer of 1995 when there were four (yes, only 4!) ISPs in town - Ahoynet, InterSerf, Illuminet and Staffnet. Only Staffnet (now Mid-Atlantic Broadband) is left out of these original four, but they laid the groundwork of providing Internet service in the Fredericksburg area.

By the middle to late late 1990s, the "dot-com" craze started. Several large nationwide backbone providers such as UUNet (MCI) and PSINet had installed POPs (Points of Presence), providing many "nationwide" providers such as AOL to the Fredericksburg area. Three of the original four "mom and pop" ISPs couldn't compete and were either forced out of business or were sold to other ISPs (for example, InterSerf was sold to Staffnet).

When started the list, I tried to list all the ISPs that serve Fredericksburg. With the explosion of "nationwide" ISPs that are really resellers of major backbone providers, it became impossible. Therefore this list will only try to concentrate on the local & regional providers and list the major nationwide providers that most people have either heard of or would be interested in.

By the end of the 1990s and continuing on to the early 2000s, the "dot-com" craze has changed to mostly "dot-bombs" and a number of them have either scaled back or gone out of business. PSINet for example has gone out of business.

This list had its origins on my Bulletin Board System (BBS) called Diamond Mine Online. When I was webmaster of the Fredericksburg PC Users Group from 1999 to 2001, I hosted this page on their website to get more exposure. Now that I am no longer working with FPCUG, I moved it back to a personal website.
